Utah Twin Newborn Photography Session
I. Utah Twin Newborn Photography
Twin Newborn Photography is a type of newborn session I particularly love! It’s extra challenging, as we’re working with not just one, but two teeny babies. (I don’t need to tell you new parents to twins that this is a joyful and chaotic undertaking). But there’s just nothing like that sweet connection between twins to bring the “oohs and aahs” to a newborn portrait session. I especially love posing newborns together and showing their special bond.
If you’d like to see what a twin newborn photography session looks like, here’s a slideshow of portraits from one of my recent twin sessions.
II. Do Twin Newborn Sessions Cost Extra?
When scheduling your Utah twin newborn photography session, many clients wonder how photographers will price the session. Does a twin newborn session mean you have to purchase two newborn packages? The answer is generally no. I don’t charge any extra for a twin session, and I know many other newborn photographers feel the same.
While the session itself may not cost extra, it may be wise to budget a little extra for portrait products. Maybe an album for each baby, or extra wall art (many parents like to have a portrait of each baby, and one of them together as well).
III. What Makes Twin Newborn Photography Unique?
- The Challenges and Rewards:
- We’re working with two unique little babies, and sometimes their schedules don’t quite line up. We may have babies on different feeding schedules, or have one baby awake while the other is asleep. One baby may be more sensitive to touch than another, making posing babies together a little more difficult.
- While twin sessions may take a little bit of extra time and patience, the rewards are well worth it! It’s such a beautiful thing to capture the connection between twins. They often enjoy being near each other, and that’s reflected in these sweet portraits.
- Experience and Expertise Required:
- When choosing a newborn photographer for a twin session, it’s even more important than usual to find a newborn photographer with plenty of experience photographing babies. Your time investment alone is worth getting it right the first time! And a qualified newborn photographer will help make the process smooth and get you the beautiful portraits you’re hoping for.
IV. Preparing for Your Utah Twin Newborn Photography Session
- Scheduling the Session:
- It’s important to get on your photographers calendar as early as possible. Many parents are reluctant to schedule before babies are born. Since we want babies in the studio when they’re between 5-18 days old (optimally), it’s best to go ahead and schedule with your best guess of when the session should take place.
- If babies come very early or late, or there is a stay in the NICU, just contact your photographer ASAP and most will be more than willing to work with you to reschedule. Since many newborn photographers take a limited number of sessions a month, rescheduling is typically easier than trying to get in last minute.
- What to Bring:
- Extra bottles/milk
- Pacifiers
- A helper if you’d like (to feed or hold babies in between photos)
- Snacks for mom
- Tips for Parents:
- Be prepared to go with the flow! Don’t stress about whether or not your babies will cooperate. Your photographer is used to working with these little babies, and will be expecting some hiccups with babies needing food or comfort. This is totally normal and expected, and it’s not going to ruin your session!
- Bring along a snack or two for mom. If these sessions take a little extra time, we want mom to be comfortable!
- Dress for success! While we want you dressed up for the pictures of you with your sweet babies, it’s awesome if you want to bring something more comfortable to change into after we’re finished with your part. Something easy to nurse in if you’re breastfeeding. Keep in mind the studio is generally on the warm side to keep babies comfy.
V. What to Expect During the Session
- Session Length and Setup:
- My Utah Twin Newborn Photography Sessions are Full Sessions only (no mini sessions). They typically run between 2.5-3 hours long, which includes time doing parent and sibling photos, photos of babies, and taking any time needed to nurse or soothe babies.
- I’ll give you a call prior to the session and find out what kinds of setups you’d like, so that I can have them ready prior to your session. This will help us move more quickly once you arrive.
- Safety First:
- The safety of your babies is my number one priority! If I have any poses where baby might wiggle out, I’ll ask for a spotter. In this case, I’ll have you (or your helper) sit next to babies while I take the photos. In these situations, I always want an adult within arms reach of your little ones.
- Poses and Props:
- I love to do a few poses with babies in a similar color scheme. I really like to have babies in SLIGHTLY different colored or textured wraps, as this highlights each baby and makes for a beautiful trio of photos (one of each baby, and one with them together) where you can easily see that two different babies are being photographed.
- Little props are my favorites, and I have all the props you need here in the studio! They are specifically chosen to be the perfect size for these little babies.
VI. Capturing Memories: What Happens After the Session
- Editing and Final Touches:
- I’ll go through your images and choose my favorites. Your photos will be edited with my final edits and will be uploaded in preparation for your Gallery Reveal.
- Gallery Reveal and Image Selection:
- We’ll schedule a Gallery Reveal that will take place about 2 weeks following your session. At this Gallery Reveal you’ll select your images (based on your portrait package) and you’ll use your Print Credit to order some beautiful heirloom products.
- Prints and Products:
- Your prints and products will be delivered to your home within a few weeks (delivery timeline is dependent on products ordered).
VII. Conclusion
- Utah Twin Newborn Photography Sessions are well worth the time and investment:
- Twin newborn photography sessions are a beautiful way to document this precious time for your sweet babies. During your twin newborn photography session, you’ll get portraits of both of your babies individually, as well as together. You’ll also get pictures of mom and dad with baby, and any family pictures you would like.
- Book Soon:
- Don’t wait to schedule your twin session! It’s much better to get on my calendar early and need to reschedule, then to try to fit a session in last minute. Booking during your second trimester is optimal!
