10 Best Utah Cake Decorators for Smash Cakes
As a photographer specializing in Cake Smash Sessions, I often get asked for recommendations on my favorite Utah Cake Decorators. Today, I’m breaking this down into a list of my 9 Favorite Cake Decorators in Utah, organized by location so you can find one nearby for your convenience.
Before we get there, I do want to take a moment to talk about Cake Smash Cakes, and how to make sure you have the best experience with your little one in their cake smash photos.
Smash Cake Ordering Tips
Cake Size
When ordering a cake for your smash session, small is just fine! We don’t need a lot of cake to make adorable pictures of your baby enjoying it for the first time. Most cake smash cakes are 4-6″ wide, round, and two/three layers tall. Whatever Utah Cake Decorator you choose, they probably know what size you’re looking for, but it’s good to make sure you’re on the same page.
Frosting Type
While many cake decorators use fondant to make those gorgeous cakes we love to look at, buttercream frosting (or something similar) works much better for cake smashes. This is because fondant tends to be pretty hard, and so it doesn’t give that nice creamy, sticky, messy look we’re going for. And to be honest, most babies don’t love the taste of fondant as much either. It’s a very good idea to request a buttercream base for your cake! Most decorators can frost the cake in buttercream frosting and then add fondant details.
Frosting Colors
There are only a few frosting colors that really need to be avoided. These are black, brown, and red. While these colors look just fine in person, they don’t show up as well in photos. They tend to give the appearance of other less appetizing things… like blood… or (well, just use your imagination here). We don’t want these colors smeared all over your baby.
Cake Colors
Same idea as frosting colors. Let’s avoid chocolate or red velvet for this one, okay? To be honest, plain old vanilla cake is a standard and I don’t see any reason to branch out from it. Most parents don’t take home the cake smash cake to share later (ewwww), so the flavor really isn’t very important as long as baby likes it. And babies really do prefer simpler flavors at this age.
Decor
Super simple or To the Nines, I really don’t care which way you go with your cake. If you’d like a simple white frosted cake, the focus will be a little bit more centered on baby and the backdrop. If you want a cake that really emphasizes a particular theme, go for it! Take your ideas to your cake decorator and see what they can do. These Utah cake decorators are absolute wizards and can make the coolest cakes!
