The Tricky Part: Keep Things Positive
This is one of the most important things you can do during the photo session. We’re trying to get beautiful, loving photos of you and your family. Keeping things loving and positive during the session is a MUST.
Set Expectations Before the Session
Make sure you set behavioral expectations before the session. This can take place a few days before the session, or on the drive over to the session. (Even better, both times). Let your children know what you expect from them (eyes on the camera, best smiles, listen to the photographer, etc). And let the children know what they can expect from you (a fun reward after the session).
If Problems need to be addressed, keep tone and words positive
Do your best to try to use positive directions / reinforcement during the session. Rather than DON’T do this- try DO this. (Instead of DON’T climb that rock, DO come over and stand with me).
Let’s get happy, loving photos
It’s hard for an ADULT to flip a switch from upset to happy in just a few minutes, and much harder for a child. For this reason we want to try to keep children happy and calm so that we can get those happy, loving photos. Keep words and tone kind, and praise your child when you see them doing a great job during the session!
It’s OK to Take a Minute
There are times when behavior HAS to be addressed- such as in cases where the child risks harming itself or others, or causing damage to property. Sometimes as parents we feel rushed to take care of the problem, but that can lead to extra misbehavior or outright meltdowns. It’s okay if you need to take a minute to address a problem. Walk away and have a quiet talk about behavior- take a minute to help child calm down and reset. We’ll be able to use the time we have much better if we take this minute to address problems completely.
